Course Topics

Understanding DIsabilities

Understanding disabilities goes beyond awareness—it requires empathy, education, and action. Disabilities can be visible or invisible, affecting individuals in diverse ways, from mobility and sensory impairments to cognitive and neurodivergent conditions.

Multicultural & Bilingual Considerations

In today’s diverse classrooms, recognizing and valuing multicultural and bilingual perspectives is essential for equitable learning. Culturally responsive teaching fosters inclusion by integrating students’ backgrounds, languages, and experiences into instruction.

Teaching Strategies

Successful teaching requires adaptable strategies that meet diverse student needs and learning styles. Effective teaching methods include differentiated instruction, active learning, and the use of technology to enhance engagement. Strategies like scaffolding, hands-on activities, and real-world applications help deepen understanding and retention.

Individualized Education Programs (IEP's)

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a customized plan designed to meet the unique learning needs of students with disabilities. Developed through collaboration between educators, parents, and specialists, an IEP outlines specific goals, accommodations, and support services to help students thrive in school.

Legal Aspects of Special Education Within The Bahamas

Special education in The Bahamas is guided by legal frameworks designed to protect the rights of students with disabilities and ensure access to inclusive, equitable education. Policies and legislation, such as the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities) Act, 2014, establish guidelines for accessibility, accommodations, and individualized support services within schools.
